Salesian Cooperators of St Philip the Apostle Province at Eastern United States, Eastern United States 00000 - Devotion to Mary, Help of Christians

Devotion to Mary, Help of Christians

St John Bosco was led by Our Blessed Mother to begin his work for the young and poor through a vision he had when he was just nine years old. This was the first of his many supernatural dreams.

Jesus appeared to him, showing him a vision of children fighting and cursing. He was told to help these boys through gentleness and kindness, showing them that sin is ugly and virtue beautiful. When John asked how he could possibly do so, Jesus answered “I will give you a Teacher under whose guidance you will learn and without whose help all knowledge becomes foolishness."

Mary then appeared and said “This is your field; this is where you must work. Make yourself humble, steadfast and strong.”

From then on John placed all his trust in the help of Our Heavenly Mother.

Cooperators follow the example of Don Bosco in his strong and filial devotion to Mary. We call upon her often, celebrate her feasts with great joy, and spread devotion to her. We pray the Holy Rosary in honor of Our Mother and especially in order to draw closer to her Divine Son. (cf RAL art. 35)

Don Bosco would often say, “Be devoted to Mary Help of Christians and you will see what miracles are!”

As Cooperators, we look to our Blessed Mother who "cooperated in a unique way in the work of the Savior and never ceases to cooperate as Mother and Helper of Christian people.” (cf RAL art. 27)

Mary loves the souls redeemed by her Son’s blood. She helps them in their difficulties and assists them in the practice of the virtues.

St. Bernard tells us, in a famous homily about Mary’s help, “If the tempest of temptation rages; if the torrent of tribulation carries you away, look at Mary… Let her memory be ever in your heart and her name always on your lips . . . But remember that to obtain the benefit of her prayer you must walk in her footsteps.”
